Description
‘Annie Baden’
2Y-YYO
[Incomparabilis 2a]
(Leeds, E., pre-1877)
This is similar to a bolder, more refined ‘Astraea’ and, being regarded, justifiably, as an improvement on ‘Leedsii’ (Incomparabilis) was awarded a First Class Certificate in 1878. The white-tipped perianth segments tend to be broader and remain more perpendicular to the “elegantly contracted” (Barr List 1884; Hartland Catalogue 1886), more deeply pleated cup. As the flower ages, the perianth segments bleach to sulphur-white, recurve and twist a little, and the bright margin of nasturtium-orange at the closely ruffled corona rim fades. According to Barr’s 1884 Conference List, this “florists’” name replaced the polynomial Incomparabilis Albidus aureo-tinctus.
