Description
MIDTOWN SWALLOW
3W-Y
[Leedsii 4b]
(unknown origin; ? British or Dutch, pre-1910)
We think this might be Smith’s pre-1904 ‘Amazon’, but we haven’t come across a sufficiently detailed description nor any picture to enable us to confirm this. She is certainly a braw lassie, her intense mimosa-yellow cup with lobes so enthusiastically ruffled, deeply furrowed, scrunched and overlapping in places as to suggest a double layer of uneven crenate lobules, resembling a larger, darker version of ‘White Lady’ with a corona of stronger substance. The large, spreading, slightly incurving milk-white perianth segments soon become obovate and gappy as the margins of the segments recurve. Very late-flowering with a light, sweet scent.
