Description
‘Sonata’
9Y-GYR
[Poeticus 9]
(Engleheart, G.H., pre-1910)
The clear, bright disk of a mature ‘Sonata’ reminds me of another favourite, the earlier-flowering ‘Ornatus’, whereas the conspicuous olive-green centre in a young flower is reminiscent of a quieter, less exuberant ‘Sea Green’. The slightly reflexed perianth segments can be very broad and blunt, but appear longer and more acute as the margins incurve. The clear white segments narrow abruptly to the base, reducing the degree of overlap. The narrow crimson rim of the circular corona is closely, regularly, minutely crenulate, fading to rich coral-pink/red, with a paper- white ring developing between it and the principal zone of soft lemony yellow, which remains slightly richer and less chalky than in ‘Ornatus’. With us, the softly, sweetly scented ‘Sonata’ flowers slightly earlier than ‘Sea Green’ and ‘Hexameter’. Of average height.
