Description
‘Glory of Lisse’
9W-YYR
[Poeticus]
(Segers, J., pre-1907)
Many catalogues dating from the early 1900s describe “Glory” as “superior to the well-known Poeticus grandiflorus in shape, substance and colour” (De Graaff wholesale catalogue, 1914). Cartwright and Goodwin (1908) are even more helpful: “a perianth after the old poeticus grandiflorus type and a small brilliant eye”. A Scillonian flower grower described “Glory of Lee” as a “bright, pale flower,” and verified the specimens we sent down to him. The perianth segments are broader than in ‘Grandiflorus’ and some remain slightly overlapping as the margins don’t tend to recurve so strongly. The corona is very similar to ‘Grandiflorus’: perhaps all the colours are slightly paler and brighter; the ribbon of rust-red a tad narrower, and the rim more scalloped; the pleats more plentiful. Until ‘Actaea’ came along, “Glory” was lauded for its size. Earlier flowering than some Poets, but flowers long-lasting. Of average height.
