Description
‘Scoticus Plenus’
4Y-Y
[Double]
(uncertain origin, pre-1827)
We are confident, from its stature and colouring, that this dwarf double daffodil is the very rare ‘Scoticus Plenus’. It certainly matches the beautiful watercolour in the collection of Copeland drawings in the Lindley Library: see https://collections.rhs.org.uk/view/6705. The plant is very dwarf; the perianth petaloids pale primrose-sulphur; and the slender coronal petaloids empire yellow – all good characters for N. pseudonarcissus var. humilis, which was formerly known as Pseudonarcissus Scoticus. The coronal petaloids tend to be of similar length, and sometimes appear quilled if the margins are strongly inrolled. ‘Rip van Winkle’ is somewhat similar, but has narrower, conspicuously mucronate perianth petaloids, the outer whorls of which are considerably longer than the coronal petaloids, and there is less contrast in the colouring.
