Description
‘Firelight’
2Y-YYO(a)
[Incomparabilis]
(R.O. [or Mrs R.O.] Backhouse, pre-1903; purportedly N. obvallaris × N. radiiflorus poetarum)
Perianth segments of rather thin substance, opening clear rich yellow and becoming primrose. Corona shallow for Division 2, widely expanded, bright orange shading to strong lemon at base and rich orange-scarlet at unevenly ruffled rim. Formerly sold (as obtained) as ‘Gloria Mundi’, then we thought it more likely to be Engleheart’s ‘Sparkler’ (hence we used the trade name MIDTOWN SPARKLER), but from further recent research we are now entirely confident this is ‘Firelight’, last commercially available in the 1920s.
