This stock had been mis-sold in the 1930s/1940s as ‘King Alfred’ to the garden from which we later obtained it. It is nevertheless an excellent garden plant. Its flowers remain too small to be “Alfred”, although the trumpet has his perfectly rolled-back rim; its perianth is less hooded and its trumpet even darker gold. For some years we offered it under the trade name MIDTOWN ALFIE, but, thirty years after acquiring it, we have at last determined it to be Barrs’ award-winning ‘Winter Gold’.
