This stock had been mis-sold in the 1930s as ‘King Alfred’ to the collection from which we later obtained it. Fifteen years of added fertiliser and seaweed later, the flowers remain too small for “Alfred”, although the trumpet has his perfectly rolled-back rim. Perianth less hooded and trumpet even darker gold. Whatever it is though, it remains an excellent garden plant.
