‘M.J. Berkeley’
1Y-Y
[Trumpet 1a]
(Backhouse, W., pre-1869; ‘Maximus’ hybrid)
In his Conference catalogue of 1884, Peter Barr describes “M.J.B.” as “The largest of all yellow trumpet Daffodils, nearly one-third larger than Maximus, which it much resembles, uniform rich deep yellow.” To define the colour thus is puzzling: it positively blazes a Horticultural-Colour-Chart-defying vibrant bright yellow. An extreme flower in every which way, the wide brim of the trumpet rolls back flat into six, conspicuously broad lobes, and the narrow perianth segments twist haphazardly – all reminiscent of the smaller, rich gold N. hispanicus, of which ‘Maximus’ is a selection.
