The “…largest clonal plant in the world…” asserts Andrew Tompsett in Golden Harvest (2006), meaning that a greater acreage of identical ‘Carlton’ bulbs was produced from the single, original, selected and named seedling than from any other vegetatively-propagated plant. The broad, creased perianth of “…soft, young duckling yellow…” (E.A. Bowles, 1934), fades to a softer hue of sulphur towards the tips and flushes bright canary-yellow at the base.
