Description
‘Dick Wellband’
2W-O(b)
[Incomparabilis]
(Backhouse, Mrs R.O., pre-1921)
A large, doughty flower, formerly recommended for commercial forcing from late January, with a bold, deeply-ruffled and pleated corona, passing from orpiment-orange on opening to nasturtium-orange in its prime. The perianth segments, which unfurl a soft mimosa-yellow, the shape of broad almonds, become milk-white and much broader and oblong. The bright corona and broad foliage, bending over in the top quarter, suggests ‘Will Scarlett’ ancestry. Dick Wellband was a pioneer of the Spalding bulb industry in the 1880s.
