Description
‘Yellow Poppy’
2Y-YYO
[Small-cupped 2a]
(Cartwright & Goodwin; pre-1914)
Tall and elegant, an endearing flower, with the prettiest of cups, and a light, sweet scent. The perianth segments are translucent primrose-yellow on opening, fading paler with a flourish of bright sulphur at the base and along overlapping margins. The corona is a neat, shallow bowl of bright canary-yellow; widely expanded, with a boss of plump, palest chrome-yellow stamens, backlit by soft apple-green. The deep, even pleats create a lightly ruffled, crenulate rim margined orangey buttercup-yellow. The entry in P. de Jager & Sons’ Flower-Bulbs catalogue of 1939 runs “…this is indeed a very fine variety. …A perfect flower of outstanding beauty and distinct colour, vigorous grower, a beautiful garden plant…”. In spite of imperfections such as deeply-creased perianth segments with incurving margins, and a less-than-circular corona, this is a flower of much grace and charm. There is hope for us all.
